Best for travel in Spain
The most beautiful places in Spain that you absolutely must visit and discover!
Few travelers have not visited Spain at least once. And for good reason, the country is in second place in the ranking of world tourist destinations. However, it is often the same places that we visit: the capital Madrid, the Catalan Barcelona, the Costa Brava for the summer vacations or the Andalusian Seville.
But Spain has more to offer. Rich in fascinating history, at the crossroads of the Arab-Muslim and Latin-European worlds, it allows you to travel through history from one region to another and across… the world! Many of the country’s sites and monuments are now classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and both the cities and the Spanish countryside are full of wonders to discover.
To help you in your Iberian adventures, we’ve prepared a list of the 20 most beautiful places to visit in Spain!
Barcelona’s diverse architecture distinguishes the city from other European destinations. Güell Park and Gaudí’s Sagrada Família are more than impressive, as are Barcelona Cathedral (also known as La Seu), Montjuïc Castle and the many medieval buildings in the Gothic Quarter. When you get tired of discovering the city’s stunning architecture, relax on the Barceloneta beach, enjoy some tasty local tapas or sip sangria along the Ramblas.
The capital of Spain has all the assets of a European vacation city par excellence: stunning architecture, a lively nightlife, world-class museums, luxury hotels and, of course, a multitude of delicious Spanish food and beverages. But also make time for a flamenco show and a Real Madrid soccer match, and don’t miss a stroll through the lush Retiro Park or a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid.
THE TOP 10 CITIES YOU HAVE TO DISCOVER
MADRID
Art lovers will be delighted! Organize a cultural weekend in Madrid and plan to spend a few hours admiring the magnificent paintings in the Prado Museum. It’s certainly the most important museum in Spain. Treat yourself and see the works of Diego Velasquez, Francisco Goya, Jerome Bosch, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Raphael and many others. Then, if you still have some strength left, you can discover the rest of this beautiful and lively capital.
GRENADE
The Alhambra Palace is the most visited monument in Spain. If you go there in winter, the views of the Alhambra at sunrise, with the snow of the Sierra Nevada in the background, are spectacular. Strolling through the gardens of the Generalife and spending hours wandering around this Moorish wonder will give you intense pleasure. There are many historical places to discover in Granada, but the Alhambra Palace should definitely be at the top of your list.
BARCELONA
Historical, religious and artistic, and an architectural nightmare still unfinished. This is how we could describe in a few words the Sagrada Familia, the incredible work of Antonio Gaudí. A visit to this monument during your stay in Barcelona is a must, if only to take a few pictures. Its interior is magnificent and the view of the city from the towers is breathtaking. The Sagrada Familia is without a doubt in our top 10 mandatory visits in Barcelona.
CORDOUE
Cordoba is a city to visit at any time of the year, except in summer when the extreme heat can make your stay unbearable. The best period is certainly the month of May when the whole city of Cordoba is in celebration. Among the must-do visits in Cordoba, you should not miss the famous Mosque of Cordoba and its 856 columns in the shape of white and red arcades. Impressive!
SÉVILLE
Another city to visit outside of the high season, Seville has plenty of reasons to attract tourists. Home of flamenco and sevillana dancing, traditional celebrations with the Feria de Abril or the Holy Week processions or simply the many tourist sites to visit, there is something for everyone. Even if it is difficult to choose just one thing, we strongly recommend that you visit the Cathedral of Seville and its famous Giralda. It is one of the largest in the world and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
MALAGA
The pretty seaside resort of Malaga is more than just a sun and beach destination. A cultural and gastronomic city, it will ensure that you spend an unforgettable weekend. Birthplace of the famous painter Pablo Picasso, the museum in the historic center dedicated to him is worth a visit. Nevertheless, our favorite is the recently inaugurated Pompidou Cultural Center of Malaga which is located at the newly renovated marina called Muelle Uno. BILBAO
The most beautiful collection of art and sculpture from Europe and America since the post-war period awaits you in the incredible Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. A weekend in Bilbao would simply not be complete without a long visit to this futuristic-looking building designed by the famous architect Frank Gerhy. In fact, the building itself is a work of art.
VALENCE
If you are planning a trip to Valencia with the whole family, a tribute to art and science is a must. Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences is a unique cultural and architectural complex that will provide great entertainment for young and old alike. There is a planetarium, a cinema, an interactive museum and the largest aquarium in Europe to name just a few of the many activities available. A show to enjoy with the whole family on a trip to Valencia.
MÉRIDA
Merida, the capital of the autonomous community of Extremadura, is ideal for a cultural and historical weekend. Founded in the year 25 B.C., the entire city is an ancient Roman ruin. The Acueduco de Los Milagros (Aqueduct of Miracles) is still visible today and well preserved. Its 38 arches are a fine example of Roman architecture.
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
In addition to being a pleasant place for a walk (!), Santiago de Compostela is also an ideal destination for a weekend getaway. The Cathedral of Santiago, in the Plaza Do Obradoiro, is the most visited place in the city, being the arrival point of the hordes of pilgrims who travel the Way of St. James every year. The Romanesque style cathedral with Gothic additions is breathtaking. Make your first stop there before exploring the old town in detail, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
